The Woman on Mercer Lane

Austin, Texas · Contemporary

An FBI analyst files contractor compliance reports. She finds something in a beige house in Austin: 811 IP addresses and a woman running a DPRK proxy operation who was simply very tired.

Overview

Dana Rourke is twenty-six years old and has been with the Counterintelligence Analysis Division for eighteen months. She has been given the filing: security audit reports from forty-one companies, stamped, logged, and filed. Nobody asked her to read them.

She reads them. She notices that contractor identities are rotating too fast, that shell companies in Malta and Montenegro are handling payments, that eight hundred and eleven remote worker identities all resolve — when she runs their IP addresses against a map — to a single beige house on a quiet residential street in Austin, Texas.

The investigation that follows — thermal overflights, bandwidth intercepts, a planned power outage, a conversation with a delivery driver — confirms what the IP addresses suggested. The house on Mercer Lane contains a basement data centre running a North Korean proxy operation targeting American defence contractors.

The woman running it is Sandra Veil. She is forty-four years old. She lost her job when her company moved to India. She lost her husband to a disease caused by chemical exposure at work. She lost her house, then her car, then her dog. She answered a job posting in a newspaper. She kept the machines running. She knew what she was doing. She was, she tells the interrogator, very tired.
