Overview
Five stories, five voices, five generations — all set in Istanbul across sixty years.
In 1962, a British officer named Hollis receives a matchbox of intelligence from a Bulgarian walk-in at a tea house with a tulip on the door. The walk-in refuses exfiltration; he disappears into a Greek church and is never seen again.
In 1987, an American duty officer named Marta Reilly — nine weeks in post — handles the defection of a Bulgarian diplomat who wants his wife out of Sofia before he will sign anything.
In 2003, a four-person liaison cell in a listening room above a chandler’s on the Galata Bridge intercepts a phone call and almost catches a Syrian operative who has been operating under a Turkish identity for six years.
In the present, a field officer called Defne receives a tasking through an unrosterable handler, identifies a duress phrase during verification, and extracts herself from an apartment in Cihangir twenty minutes before the operation it was meant to facilitate turns lethal.
Connecting all four stories is The Watcher: an unnamed woman who has kept notebooks in Istanbul since 1962, observed every one of these operations without being seen, and is now, at last, preparing to leave — and to leave the notebooks for whoever is sent next.
