Overview
In October 2013, a man was arrested in Fairfax County, Virginia. He had lived there for eleven years under a false identity, as the husband of an American woman named Susan and the father of two American children. He declined all interviews. Susan did not.
The story takes the form of long-form journalism: a journalist’s account of multiple conversations with Susan, now fifty-eight and teaching third grade, reconstructing the marriage through her memories. Excerpts from an FBI interrogation transcript appear throughout, offering a parallel account that does not always agree with hers.
The story does not take a position on who is right. It is interested in a different question: what is a marriage when one of the people in it never existed in the form the other believed? Susan’s account is honest, precise, and deeply human. The transcript is also honest, precise, and deeply human. The man himself says nothing.
